Capital Gains Tax Calculator
Federal tax on short-term and long-term gains. Change the numbers and the result updates instantly.
How it works
Assets held one year or less are taxed as short-term gains at your ordinary income rate. Assets held longer than a year get lower long-term rates of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your taxable income. High earners may also owe the 3.8% net investment income tax. The calculator stacks your gain on top of your other taxable income.
Example
Example: a single filer with $80,000 of income and a $30,000 long-term gain pays mostly at the 15% rate. The same gain taxed as short-term would cost noticeably more.
Tips
- Change one input at a time to see what moves the result most.
- Use realistic rates. Check current averages before you decide.
- Results are estimates and do not replace advice from a licensed professional.
