How it works

Most tax-deferred retirement accounts require you to start taking yearly withdrawals, called required minimum distributions, in the year you reach age 73 (75 if you were born in 1960 or later). The amount is the account balance on December 31 of the prior year divided by a life-expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. Missing an RMD can trigger a large penalty.

Example

Example: a $500,000 balance at age 75 uses a factor of 24.6, so the RMD is about $20,325. Roth IRAs do not have RMDs for the original owner. Special rules apply if your spouse is more than 10 years younger and is your sole beneficiary.

Tips

  • Change one input at a time to see what moves the result most.
  • Use realistic rates. Check current averages before you decide.
  • Results are estimates and do not replace advice from a licensed professional.
